The Benefit of Living in New Construction

Every morning, I am waken by the banging of hammers as houses are being built around me. The traffic comes and goes; however, nothing adds to your level of frustration when the concrete truck and the boom are getting setup to pour the walls of the basement and foundation. Nonetheless, in construction, this is the MOST important process.

So what happens when the foundation is slightly off?

The people who pour the foundation have one job… pour the foundation. Once it has been poured, they move on to the next lot, form the area, and pour another foundation. When the next group arrives, they then take the original plan, compare measurements and begin to construct the frame of the house. At this point, if the foundation is off, they go back to the plan and make the appropriate adjustments so that the house will have walls at 90 degrees and a perfectly pitched roof. As the framers make cuts to the lumber the form of the house begins to take shape.

As each trade does their part of the build, the house begins to look more like a house and less like match sticks. Throughout the process, there are inspections that ensure that the house-build can continue. If something does not pass inspection, that portion needs to be redone with the proper adjustments. The particular trade will coordinate with another as they work together to fix the issue. It is very important to note that if a particular portion does not pass inspection, the house is not demolished. That portion is fixed, the build continues and VOILA you have a house.

So does this parallel to education?

It all begins with the lessons taught by parents/guardians and family friends. They teach their child what they know and believe to be important. At a specific age, these parents/guardians place their child in a formal educational settings, which includes home school. It is at this point where it is important to have that trusting relationship because all to often than not, the parents/guardians cannot teach beyond a certain point, which is just like those who pour foundations.

Great teachers spend a huge amount of time planning their units and lessons. Great teachers take those lessons, see who the students are in front of them, and make the appropriate adjustments to ensure learning. Just like inspections during a house-build, teachers utilize assessment as and of learning, which inform them of the necessary changes that have to be done prior to moving forward. By using clear learning goals, success criteria, and descriptive feedback, teachers can make the appropriate changes in their delivery methods. Nevertheless, if a delivery method is not clear, great teachers collaborate with other great teachers who have attempted the needed delivery method. At no time, is the student thought to be broken and thrown away. Great teachers see there is a gap in a specific learning need/skill and address it before moving forward.

And once that gap is addressed, the learning continues, and VOILA you have a life-long learner!

What do you use to get your mind in the right space when the time comes?

For the teachers in Ontario, the thought of being in a classroom slightly disappears between June 30th and August 26th. Principals and Vice-Principals of the Avon Maitland District School Board are officially on vacation between the second week in July and the third week in August. I am pretty sure that this is similar across the globe. (If your Board/District is different, please inform us as part of your comment below.) So what does that feel like?

EVERY DAY IS SATURDAY!!!

Some of you have different vacation times; however the feeling is the same. We do our best to turn off school. Outside of professional growth opportunities, such as the five online courses that I am taking this summer we do our best to, as Chef Ramsey would say in the episodes of Hell’s Kitchen, “Shut it down!” We do this because we all recognize that school becomes a part of our everyday every moment and fabric of our psyche. Whether is at 2 o’clock in the morning, standing in line at the grocery store, walking the dog, working out in the gym, etc. we are engulfed with thoughts of how to improve our practice, what should we do next in our unit/lesson planning, reach those students who we know can do better, and/or reach that parent or community member who desperately needs our attention.

OUR SUMMER VACATIONS ARE WELL DESERVED!!!

Now our summers and vacations are coming to an end. My former school districts down south have already begun: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’, Durham Public Schools’, and Orange County Schools’ first teacher work day was August 19th. Wake County Schools System’s first teacher work day was August 20th. Nevertheless, all schools, with the exception of CHCCS (August 27th) will begin on Monday, August 26th. Ontario schools will begin the day after Labour Day!

Where do I belong?

So I am sitting here drinking my morning coffee and re-watching, “Crazy Rich Asians (2018)”. This is a great movie. Because I do not want to give out too much information, let us use IMDb‘s storyline:

Rachel Chu, an American-born Chinese NYU professor travels with her boyfriend, Nick to his hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick’s family is wealthy, and he’s considered the most eligible bachelor in Asia. Every single woman is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.

Now, besides the fact that this movie is based on a best selling novel, a major majority of the cast members are of Asian descent. Furthermore, the majority of this film takes place in Southeast Asia. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this movie, here is one of the trailers.

Crazy Rich Asians

The only other movie that comes to mind that had the same affect on audiences of colour was “Black Panther (2018)”. Again, I go to IMDb so that I do not give too much away if you have not seen it, yet. According to the editor:

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Prince T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new king. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Now all of a sudden you have two films where people of colour can see themselves as well as their heritage. For those of you who have not seen “Black Panther” here is one of it’s teaser trailers.

So how can I take these two blockbuster films and translate it to the present and future needs of education?

Culturally Relevant Leadership and Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy

Using the phrases “I see”, “I think”, and “I wonder”, I will describe the relationship between Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy and Leadership as these practices relate to the Standards of Practice, Ethical Standards, and the Ontario Leadership Framework.

I SEE the need to have authentic relationships with all learners.   They must be able to see themselves in the curriculum. Because of our unconscious biases, it is evermore important that we recognize our shortcomings, become vulnerable and ask questions for clarity and understanding. Just like these two movies, as we begin to see ourselves in mainstream curriculum, not as an elective course, our engagement increases.

Fostering culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy requires us to dive deeper in our assessment and evaluation of students’ learning.  When having a greater focus on observations and conversations, teachers and students have multiple opportunities to learn from each other.  Without having conversations around the curricular expectations and co-creating success criteria, students do not have an opportunity to express their learning in means that make sense to them AND teachers do not have an opportunity to learn more about their students’ experiences in a culturally relevant world.  (Lynch, Matthew, “What is Culturally Responsive Pedagogy?, 2011)

I THINK we struggle with this notion because, as educators, we are supposed to be “all knowing”.  Having to admit that you do not know everything stresses some educators to the nth degree.

With the potential of rural schools closing and classroom sizes increasing, I WONDER if will we have the courage to provide culturally relevant and responsive leadership and pedagogy?

Hollywood is beginning to figure out this notion as they battle for our limited dollars. Have they perfected it? No. Are they aware of the need for continual improvement? Yes.

I am going to leave you with an interesting Twitter posting from Trevor Noah concerning the inclusivity of Hollywood. Can you see the parallels of what we are asking our teachers and administrators to do when it comes to our practices? Since we know that an engaged student is a learning student, what stops us from having these type of conversations to ensure that students know where they belong?

Imagine the impact of culturally relevant leadership and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy if we truly listened to all students (both the enfranchised and the disenfranchised) while making at a point to ensure that they ALL can see themselves in the curriculum and day-to-day educational experiences.

What was I thinking?

So last night I was walking the dog and remembered, I need to see if me learning how to blog can help rebrand the AMDSB Student Senate and their desire to improve communication among students, students’ councils, and the Board and Trustees. Then I thought, I could possibly take what I am learning and see how we can get our secondary student body connected to each other and use the Senate’s blog/website as a conduit.

Guess what makes this a “What was I thinking?” moment. It was 10:30 PM. I know that I am in a class to learn how expand my digital portfolio but how in the world did my mind drift into the 2019-2020 academic school year? I mean, seriously… I am on vacation!!! As an educator needs to have the ability to turn off school and walk a dog while leaving school behind. Just like I never recall thinking about walking the dog even in my most boring moments at school, which are far, few, and in between. I then went into a quick meditation focusing on my breathing and being present with my sister-in-law’s dog that I agreed to watch for the week.

How was I able to do this?

Why Just Burt?

As a native of North Carolina, I am constantly asked the same thing once people know my full name. Hi. I am Jason Hendrix Burt; however, as a Burt-male, our family tradition is to be called by our last names once you hit the ‘rite of passage’. So when you refer to me, I am just Burt. Otherwise, I might not answer.

So this is my first time blogging. I do not know what I think about it right now. My nerves are jittery. I have retyped this sentence six times because I keep making the same typing errors. But I think that I can do this…

So currently I am taking an online course called Collaborative Leadership Inquiry/Digital Leadership Portfolio. This course is in three parts:

  1. Participation in a Collaborative Inquiry
  2. Creation of a personal blog
  3. Digital Leadership Portfolio

The first session was particularly neat. One of the facets of education is trying to continually improve our practice. This; however, is often complicated by the nature of individuals who struggle in separating their profession with their persona. More often than not, when a practice is challenged, that is asked if it is what is best for kids, we quickly feel that we are personally being attacked and not treated a professionals.

What that first session taught was if we can get educators more involved in the process of learning and reflection, we are all better off in the long run. And a book that I am currently reading, The Answer to How is Yes: Acting on What Matters by Peter Block has really help frame my thinking and intentional use of language.

The second session is what we are doing now.

Putting your thoughts in the airways as part of conversations and dialogues are one thing. It is a whole new level when you are putting your thoughts on print on the vastly growing web for all to see. Is this fearful? HECK YEAH! Should I push forward? Absolutely!!!
